Default Manage inventory of base product?

We have a base product that we offer under separate product codes in custom-modified versions. We want to manage inventory of the base product. Each time the modified version is ordered want it deducted from the inventory of the base product. (The modified version is not an "option", but a separate product.)

For example
Product A: http://www.audio-magus.com/product_p/ta10m3.htm
is a modified version of
Product B: http://www.audio-magus.com/product_p/ta10.htm

We want to have to have the inventory of B reduced whenever A is sold.

Have tried Child dependencies, but it does not show child, just parent...

Any ideas on how to do this?

Share_StockStatus_With (found in vendor information section)

This field allows you to use the same stock status as another product in your store. If this product is an accessory of another product, you may want them to share stock status, and be hidden when the other's stock is deleted, or reordered when the other's Stock Re-Order Qty has been reached.

This might work: Make Product B a free accessory of Product A, but select the hide free accessory option.
