Default Template doctype: validation errors & warnings

Hi all,

We are relatively new to the Volusion platform, and we've noticed that no doctype was applied to the template we used (40 - estore - Diamond).

A little late perhaps, we decided to check the hompage against code validators (i.e. w3c and tidy). What we find are zero errors, however a TON of warnings (tidy = 470+ and wc3 = 1500+)! If we leave it to W3C to determine the doctype, it can't. If we leave a doctype out completely, it gets fewer but still alot of warnings (tidy = 271 and w3c ~1000).

We have tried every combination we can think of to validate against, but they all lead to a different, but tremendous amount of warnings (zero errors though). Also, only a minimal amount of code has been added, and it was all through the Volusion GUI editor.

The questions are these:

1.) Is there a streamlined way to clean this up?

2.) How critical overall are the "warnings", as opposed to "errors"?

3.) How critical is it that no "doctype" code exists (as far as search engine PR).

4.) Is this template supposed to be XHTML?

We did go through (with the idea that it's XHTML) and at least set all tags to lower case, but the warnings don't decrease!

Your help/ideas on this are greatly appreciated.

mac
